Sonya MacDonald is a licensed Psychologist. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Psychology from Acadia University and graduated from University of Toronto (OISE) with a Masters of Education degree specializing in Counselling Psychology.
She has worked in a variety of settings including university counselling services, adolescent mental health community centers, and over 13 years experience in the public sector at outpatient mental health and addictions with the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
Sonya currently works with adolescents (14+), adults, and couples providing psychotherapy for a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, PTSD, anger, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, psycho-oncology and life transitions.
Using an integrative approach, Sonya draws from multiple therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based therapies and Solution-focused approaches. She strives to create a comfortable, empathic, and empowering environment to which the therapeutic alliance is cornerstone to personal growth and change.
