Overcoming Challenges in Treating OCD: New ideas for old problems

Presented by: The Department of Psychology at Acadia University Location: Fountain Commons Great Hall, Acadia University, Wolfville, NS

Description: Obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD) is challenging to treat. Cognitive behaviour therapy with an exposure component is the most effective psychological treatment for OCD to date. However, when treatment refusal and dropout rates are taken into account, only 50% of people experience clinically significant benefits, and even then “successful” treatment is associated with only a 40%reduction in symptoms. Therapists often find that there commended strategies are not satisfactorily effective, and clients often leave treatment feeling discouraged, frustrated, and alienated. In this workshop I will offer some ideas as to why first line strategies may fail, discuss new ways of understanding OCD persistence, and offer new approaches to old strategies.

This is a full-day workshop on Cognitive-Behavioural Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Speaker is Christine Purdon, PhD, C Psych
