Dr. Tara Power and Empowerment Health Services seeks psychologists interested in expanding their skills to include neuropsychological and comprehensive psychological assessments within a legal context. 

We are a private practice firm in Truro, Nova Scotia specializing in independent medical evaluations (IME) in the Atlantic Provinces and Ontario. These assessments are offered both virtually and in person. We seek a dedicated and skilled psychologist to join our team as part of our ongoing growth.

At Empowerment Health, you will be able to provide comprehensive psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments and learn about the intersection of law and psychology. We have established relationships with a multitude of IME agencies and can provide the right candidate with the opportunity to learn and grow within our practice. This position would be perfect for a psychologist looking to gain experience in neuropsychological and psychological assessment, medical evaluations and the processes of expert witness testimony.

Duties:

• Design assessment protocols appropriate for each case.
• Conduct assessments through various treatment modalities, including interviewing, behavioural, observation, self-report inventories and psychologist-administered test batteries. 
• Conduct personal history interviews with examinees.
• Review academic and medical records.
• Administer and score neuropsychological and psychological tests (intelligence, academic achievement, cognition, personality) to adults.
• Provide a comprehensive oral and/or written assessment of client functioning that may include specific information on the following areas: intellectual, neuropsychological, and psychological (including psychopathology). 
• Provide treatment recommendations based on your knowledge of evidence-based research.
• Produce and maintain confidential client clinical records under established standards and procedures.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of patients being investigated and encourage optimal performance by providing appropriate physical and psychological support.
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Master’s or Doctoral degree in clinical psychology from an accredited institution.
• Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Nova Scotia.
• Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with clients and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team. 
• Excellent English language skills (spoken and written)

Qualifications that may be assets:

• Experience conducting psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments in a clinical setting.
• Strong diagnostic skills and ability to formulate treatment plans based on assessment results.
• Strong clinical skills and knowledge of evidence-based practices for treating various mental health disorders.
• Demonstrated knowledge of treatment and behaviour management modalities, psychological and neuropsychological testing and interpretation. 
• Ability to prepare comprehensive written assessments. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation.
• Prior experience.

Staff Psychologist Duties and Contributions

• Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments tailored for law enforcement and policing roles, to determine psychological suitability for employment in high-risk occupations.
• Utilize a variety of assessment tools including the MMPI-3, 16PF, and other psychometric measures to evaluate personality traits, psychopathology, and psychological readiness.
• Review pre-interview questionnaires and administer structured stress interviews and clinical interviews to further assess psychological readiness and suitability for careers involving law enforcement.
• Collaborate with the Senior Clinical Psychologist to lead consultations on challenging cases, providing guidance on additional testing and interviews required for making final determinations on psychological suitability.
• Prepare comprehensive evaluation reports outlining psychological suitability for prospective employers, ensuring clarity and adherence to professional standards.
• Provide feedback to candidates on individual assessment results as requested, offering insight and guidance based on psychological evaluations.
• Conduct psychological assessments following the removal of duty firearms, addressing concerns such as substance abuse, recovery, and sobriety management.
• Perform psychological assessments for re-arming, utilizing tools such as the MAST, DAST, and DSM-V, and conducting clinical interviews to ensure readiness to resume full duties.
• Assess psychological readiness for resuming or continuing full duties following involvement in critical incidents, providing support and guidance as needed.
• Conduct quality assurance (QA) reviews of assessment reports, ensuring adherence to accuracy and established standards specific to law enforcement and policing requirements.
• Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of assessment programs for law enforcement and policing roles, including the design and refinement of assessment protocols based on research and industry best practices in this field.

Qualifications

• Doctoral-level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Psychology is preferred.
• Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Psychology will be considered, provided they have relevant experience and expertise in conducting psychological assessments, particularly in law enforcement or related fields.
• Licensed for autonomous practice with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology.
• A minimum of 2 years of recent experience working for public entities (federal, provincial, or municipal).
• Must have completed 50 assessments for psychological readiness of candidates for high-risk employment requiring the issuance of duty defensive equipment in the last 10 years.
• Must obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance at the Reliability level.
• Bilingualism in English and French is a strong asset.
